The Kirwin Hall rotunda pulsed with vibrant energy Friday night as attendees gathered for the first-ever “Can you pass the mic, please?” event highlighting artists from the DMV and celebrating Black History Month at the University of Maryland. Two university student organizations, Young Black Creative and Student Success Media, hosted the event.
The rotunda was filled with paintings, photographs and vendors selling their art. The center of the rotunda acted as a stage for live performances to come later in the night.
Mikhi Kelly, a photographer, exhibited his work “Smokey Mirrors”, inspired by the introduction to Don Miguel Ruiz’s “The Four Agreements.” Ruiz’s exploration of the concept of reflections and limiting beliefs resonated with Kelly.

At 7:01 a.m. on a chilly Tuesday morning, customers at Bagels ‘n Grinds, a local College Park, Maryland breakfast spot, are still half-asleep. Students drag themselves inside to escape the cold, but even the strong scent of coffee and bright lights can’t wake up their tired eyes and foggy minds.
Bagels ‘n Grinds manager Rob Hawkins appears from behind the counter like someone just pressed “play” on the morning, “Who’s ready to get HYPE!” he shouts, stretching his arms wide.
Hawkins, known on TikTok and Instagram as “@hypehizzle69,” has been here since 5 a.m. Within seconds, he’s dancing with customers, making rhymes out of order numbers and energizing a table of sleepy freshmen as if they are about to run onto the Maryland football field instead of an 8 a.m. lecture.

The Maryland Terrapins battled the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 77-70 victory Feb. 11 at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland.
The Terps (10-14) looked to keep the ball rolling following their electric victory at Minnesota. The Hawkeyes (18-6) aimed to extend their win streak to seven games.
“These last two wins have been very big for us, just getting our confidence up, and we’re all on the same page now, so it feels good,” Darius Adams said following the Terps’ second victory in a row.
The Terps went on to lose against Rutgers 57-68 in an away game against Rutgers Sunday and lost 74-78 against Northwestern in an away game at Illinois.

This Week in Black Explosion History
Black History Week Feb. 13-Feb. 19, 1972 Issue
The cover of the February 1972 edition of The Black Explosion featured a drawing of Nat Turner. Turner was an enslaved African American preacher who believed that he was called on by God to deliver African Americans from slavery, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. On Aug. 21, 1831, Turner and others marched through Southampton County, Virginia, killing at least 55 people before authorities stopped them. Two months after evading capture, Turner was tried in court and hanged on Nov. 11, 1831. Following the revolt, white Americans became stricter on laws regarding enslaved Americans.
