Mofi Solarin, former co-director of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee of the University of Maryland’s Student Government Association, made public comments about the Nov. 4 altercation that led to her firing. Solarin alleged the actions against her are indicative of racism in the SGA’s ranks.
“The sequence of events and the broader semester-long pattern reflect a culture where my reactions are scrutinized while the provocations against me are minimized or ignored,” she stated in an email sent to the SGA legislature Nov. 18. Solarin alleged that the altercation and her termination “weaponized stereotypes about Black women being ‘aggressive.’”
The statement refers to a Nov. 4 altercation between Solarin and Mateo Rojas, the co-director of the SGA’s Research and Technology committee. Mirani notified Solarin of her dismissal via email on Nov. 11, alleging that her actions during the altercation violated SGA policy.

Today in Black Explosion History
This month 55 years ago, the second volume of The Black Explosion came out, including poetry, sports and of course Black student news. BE was founded in 1970 by student Patricia Wheeler because of a lack of representation in The Diamondback.
In the volume, the new BSU president outlined his goals. The quote of the month was from Julian Bond, the only Black member of the Georgia legislature, about how Black Americans may have to resort to violence if the hoped-for coalition between white and Black students was not reached.
According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's website, Bond served the Georgia House of Representatives for four terms, organizing Georgia's Black Caucus.
Bond went on to become chairman of the NAACP in 1998, where he served for 11 years. Bond described the position as "the most powerful job a Black man can have in America."

December 2025 Quote of the Month:
“The civil rights movement didn't begin in Montgomery and it didn't end in the 1960s. It continues on to this very minute.” — Julian Bond, 1940-2015
