The University of Maryland Men’s Basketball Team (2-0) wins Friday night with an incredible 86-52 victory over the Mount St. Mary Mountaineers (1-1). Maryland is now 12-0 all-time against the Mountaineers, dating back to their first matchup on Dec. 8, 1987.
Rodney Rice finished the night with 28 points, five rebounds and two assists in just 20 minutes of action. Ja’Kobi Gillespie followed it up with 13 points, two rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes of action.
While Derik Queen didn’t have as big of a scoring night as he had in his debut, he still finished the night with eight points and led the team with three assists.
The Terps started off slow in the beginning of the first half, as they were down 0-7.
But after getting their first two-point bucket from Selton Miguel, their defensive presence took form. As Head Coach Kevin Willard put it, “they weathered the storm, and then they kinda imposed their will.”
After overcoming an eight point deficit, Maryland never looked back, playing aggressively on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor.
While Rice and Gillespie scored for the team in the first half, others held the Mountaineers to just 18 points. The team scored an astounding 48 points after being down 2-10; they were 7-of-13 from three point line, 11-of-14 on free-throws and an additional seven offensive rebounds for a resounding 58-26 lead at half time.
When it came to the second half, it was the same story. The Terps held the Mountaineers to just another 26 points and added 30 offensive points of their own.
The team finished the night with 28-65 field goals, 9-23 3-point attempts, 21-30 free throws, 38 rebounds, 13 assists, 16 steals and just five turnovers overall while forcing twenty-three turnovers off Mount St. Mary Mountaineers.
The Terrapins are now 2-0 in the season and are looking to continue their roll against Florida A & M Rattlers on Monday Nov. 11, who they last played back in 2006 in a riveting 93-54 win.
