The Black Explosion is the University of Maryland’s first and only Black student newspaper. Established in 1970, the Black Explosion works to conduct reporting on Black campus life, issues, and students. We hire students from all disciplines and all backgrounds to work on our incredible staff! You do not have to be a journalism student to apply!! We’re looking for individuals with strong digital media, social media, writing, or business skills.
General Requirements
- Desire to support news coverage of the University of Maryland, College Park community
- Interested in covering the University of Maryland’s Black and African student diasporas
- Able to attend weekly staff meetings (Thursday’s @ 6:30 p.m. in Knight Hall, Room 1206)
- Show a strong ability to collaborate with staff across the newsroom

General Assignments
Reporters who are interested in contributing to our general assignments desk must complete a freelancer application. Freelancers are responsible for the story they pitch or are assigned by the general assignments editor.

The Black Explosion loves hearing from the university community and sharing guest opinions is a way to get your voice heard with our audience. Opinion articles are 300-500 word stories on a topic of the author’s choice.
All guest opinions should be emailed in a Google Doc format, with an accompanying photo, and three headline options. Stories may be edited for style and fit.
