Maryland Men’s Basketball defeats Washington Huskies
The Maryland Terrapins crunched out a nailbiter against the Washington Huskies, 64-60, Saturday afternoon at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland.
The Terps (11-16) caught fire, knocking down 10 threes in a bounce-back win at home following two road losses. Washington (13-14) dropped its fourth of the last five games and will look to bounce back on the road against Rutgers on Tuesday.
Andre Mills put in two free throws with just under a minute to play, the Terps led 62-60. A scramble for a loose ball gave Washington the possession arrow after a jump ball.
After another Huskies offensive rebound, a block from Guillermo Del Pino ended up in the hands of Mills. Mills passed the ball to Del Pino, then threw a lob for Mills to punch the game home with an emphatic alley-oop dunk to ignite the crowd one last time.
Mills said after the game he passed up to Del Pino but immediately knew he wanted a lob back to send the Terps fans home with something to cheer for.
Maryland Head Coach Buzz Williams said following the electric ending, he’ll have to go back to watch the play to see if Del Pino should’ve thrown the lob. Mills called for the pass, but the Terps led by two with about four seconds left. However, Williams noted the Huskies would’ve had to foul anyway.
Solomon Washington brought the energy from the tip-off, adding a double double with 11 rebounds and 12 rebounds with just under 13 minutes to play in the game. Maryland trailed 54-51 with just under eight minutes left in the contest, but the Terps had a lot left in the tank. Washington ended the game with 14 rebounds and 11 points to sweeten the performance.
Washington said the pressure that Collin Metcalf put on the rim allowed him to run free to the basket for easy rebounds as the Huskies usually sent two bodies at Metcalf, allowing a free lane for Washington to eat on the glass.
Early in the game Maryland was capitalizing on the Huskies mistakes. At halftime, the Terps were outscoring Washington 16-4 on second chance as well as points off turnover opportunities. Maryland only committed three turnovers in the first half while outrebounding Washington by six.
The Huskies Zoom Diallo led all scorers with 10 at the break. For the Terps, Washington had six points and eight rebounds, dominating the glass in the first half. Andre Mills led the team with nine points.
Maryland led 34-32 at the half, correcting nearly all of their past miscues that previously plagued this season. Freshman guard Del Pino provided much needed spacing and shot creation off the bench.
Williams said Del Pino was the difference in this game. His size, IQ and shot creation could be big for this young Terps team moving forward.
Mills finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. He also had five assists. He added after the game that he has been working on his reads, taking advantage of Elijah Saunders’ three-point shooting and Washington’s freak athleticism. Saunders finished with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range. Mills detailed how Washington is one of the most athletic on the team.
Maryland will be back in action at No. 9 Nebraska (23-4) on Wednesday in Lincoln, Nebraska.
