Welcome to Volume 2 of The Aftershock, The Black Explosion's weekly newsletter.

It's a new year and our stories this week bring you new leaders, new rankings and a few new ways you can keep yourself safe, physically and digitally.

And for BE, we're officially under a new (but also old) publisher, Maryland Media. In this flurry of new, there's one thing that won't change: our dedication to quality reporting for and about UMD's Black student body.

UMD’s Black Student Union has a new president and his name is Bryant Reed

A new school year means a new president for BSU. Meet Bryant Reed a information systems major entering his junior year at UMD.
|
His goal for the years is making sure BSU is a space where Black students can feel comfortable and belong.
|
Reed didn't delve into the specifics of his plan for the year, telling the campus community to "stay tuned." You can see what he has in store during the organization's general body meetings held every Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Nyumburu Cultural Center.

UMD reacts to being ranked third for best college sports fans

Could this be the year? Maybe...

But any skepticism towards Maryland sports didn't show in USA Today's ranking of Terps as the third best college sports fanbase in the nation, only behind Auburn and West Virginia University.
|
UMD was specifically highlighted for its strength across collegiate sports like basketball, soccer and lacrosse.
|

Today in BE History: A Tale of Two Papers
Depending on how you look at it, the length of The Black Explosion's hiatus from Maryland Media has been either 13 years or over four decades. How can this be?
|
Well, dear reader, 36 years ago a Black Explosion publisher named D.C. Wright, Jr., answered that question by accounting the history of BE and its "successor paper" The Eclipse. While Wright does show love for the Eclipse staff of the fall of 1990, the same grace is not extended to the 1985 editorial team responsible for the name change:
|
"As then BSU President Ed Martin said at the time, 'maybe the editor had looked into one too many eclipses.'"
|
To *briefly* complete Wright's account of events: The Eclipse stopped publishing in 2013. BE continued under the Nyumburu Cultural Center from 1985 until Maryland Media once again became BE's publisher in 2026.

And, if you're asking me, it's nice to be back with Maryland Media after 41 years.
|
|
