R&B Artist Lucky Daye Drops Flavorful, Second Album “Candydrip”
R&B singer Lucky Daye released his second studio album “Candydrip” on March 10.
The album consists of 17 tracks, including two singles “Over” and “Candy Drip”, and two interludes “Candy Drip'' and “Touch Somebody.” Daye shows off his spoken word skills on the intro and Candy Drip interlude. In both pieces, he admires and woos a lover over a similar instrumental to the succeeding track.
Daye’s buttery voice helps guide the listeners through different flavors. According to Daye in an interview with Apple Music, the album continues the exploration of different senses exposed to listeners.
“A lot of ‘Candydrip’ is literally just sensory,” said Daye, “like the first album was colors, this album is taste.”
The singer uses familiar techniques from his first studio album “Painted,” which include altering his voice to a higher pitch or distorting it to a lower pitch, and a beat change up in the middle of the track (“Feels Like.”)
Daye continues to incorporate nostalgic elements of 70s funk in songs like, “God Body'' and “Cherry Forest,” and samples Usher’s “U Don't Have to Call'' for his romantic song, “Guess.” He also samples the guitar strings of Musiq Soulchild’s Half-Crazy for “Over.”
Daye made sure to keep up with the modern sound in “NWA,” but puts his own twist on it. He welcomes a range of guest artists like Smino, Lil Durk, and Chiiild.
Daye, whose real name is David Brown, grew up singing in New Orleans, Louisiana and even competed in American Idol back in the 2000s, according to his biography on Apple Music.
He didn't get his official start until 2018 where he dropped two EPs titled “I” and “II.” Daye dropped “Painted” in May 2019, followed by a deluxe version in 2020. Last year, he dropped a feature-filled EP called “Table for Two.”
