University psychology students host conversation on colorism in the makeup industry

Students in the Psychology of Women course at the University of Maryland hosted a conversation regarding colorism in the makeup industry this past Friday where students had to do a gender empowerment project according to Kimi Hsiao, a junior psychology major.  The event was co-sponsored by Body+, a student-run organization that promotes discussions about body positivity.

UMD purchased $4.3 million of furniture made with prison labor in 2022, public records show

The University of Maryland committed to divesting from prison labor as part of 25 demands made by the university's Black student leaders in June 2020. However, purchase records show that the university continues to buy products from the Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) and last year, purchases totaled $4.3 million. This new documentation calls into question the transparency of the university’s commitment to “continue to study the relationship with Maryland Correctional Enterprises.”

Common Ground discussion program at UMD hosts talks between students

The Common Ground Multicultural Dialogue Program was created 20 years ago in hopes of making an environment where students could engage in difficult topics. This program is an important structure in the University’s curriculum because it encourages students to become critical thinkers in an attempt to understand the world and people that surround them.
