The Star Strutters' First Performance Sparks the Controversial PWI vs. HBCU Debate

Every dance team looks forward to their very first performance, and the UMD Star Strutters were no different. After months of practices and technique classes, they would finally take the stage as UMD’s very first band dance team, at the February 16th Date Auction sponsored by UMD NPHC, Black Student Union and The Lunch Table.

While UMD already has a cheerleading squad, Guard and Dance Team, the form of band dance that Shanell Erhunmwunse, freshman letters and sciences major and captain of Star Strutters, introduced to UMD was something traditionally seen at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Sexual harassment: the hydra-headed issue of the year

One would think that in 2017 sexual harassment, assault and misconduct of women in the workplace would be a thing of the past. In the weeks since Actress Ashley Judd came out in a New York Times article accusing film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment, legions of other women like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow Rose McGowan and most recently Lupita Nyong’o have stepped forward and recounted their horrific encounters with Weinstein. Some are accusing him of sexual harassment, assault and in the most extreme cases, rape.

Student Entertainment Events hosted on Thursday Insecure's Yvonne Orji as part of their Hear the Turtle series. The event aimed to start conversations about diversity and decrease tensions on campus. With humor and grace, Orji discussed the importance of diversity, being a black woman immigrant in the Trump era, as well as getting her start in Hollywood.

White Woman Leaves Racist Voicemail on UMD Professor’s Voicemail

African American studies professor Dr. Jason Nichols posted a video of a racist ranting voicemail that he received that compared black people to "jungle monkeys" and repeatedly referred to blacks using the N-word.

Nichols, an African American studies professor at the University of Maryland, recently appeared on Tucker Nelsons show on Fox news to discuss Columbus day. Nichols has often been featured on Fox to talk about subjects pertaining to race and culture. During the interview Nichols discussed the problematic nature of Columbus day.

Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin Lecture UMD on “Good Trouble”

The lecture titled “Good Trouble” explored how Lewis and Aydin used different forms of civil disobedience, like marches, sit-ins or social movement hashtags in tweets, to change decisions that impacted them or others. The chapel’s first floor was filled to capacity with students, faculty and other Maryland residents, young and old, prepared to hear Lewis and Aydin speak.

Lewis and Aydin were sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies, the William L. Thomas ODK Lecture Series, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The lecture provided students and faculty with the opportunity to learn more about “The Boy from Troy.”
